What this test measures
Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines from food and from its own cells. When levels stay high, crystals can settle in joints and in the kidneys – which is why this single value often explains a sudden, intensely painful big toe or a recurring stone.
Who should consider it
Anyone with sudden severe joint pain, swelling or redness, a history of kidney stones, or a family history of gout. Also worth checking for adults with high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome, since raised uric acid frequently travels with them.
Preparation
Fasting is not strictly required, though many physicians prefer an overnight fast. Avoid alcohol and a heavy non-vegetarian meal the night before, as both can push the reading up.
