What this test measures
This measures total calcium in blood, most of it bound to albumin and the rest circulating freely. Calcium is central to bone strength, muscle contraction, nerve signalling and clotting, and the body holds it in a narrow range through parathyroid hormone and vitamin D.
Who should consider it
Anyone with recurrent muscle cramps, tingling around the mouth or fingers, bone pain, or a history of kidney stones. It is also commonly paired with vitamin D and parathyroid hormone when bone health is being assessed.
Preparation
No strict fasting required, though an overnight fast is preferred. Mention calcium or vitamin D supplements, and any antacids, at the time of collection.
