What this test measures
This measures glucose in your blood at whatever moment the sample is taken, with no reference to when you last ate. It is a quick snapshot rather than a controlled measurement, which makes it valuable when symptoms need checking straight away.
Who should consider it
Anyone feeling unwell with excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision or sudden weakness who does not want to wait until the next morning to fast. Also handy for people already on diabetes treatment who want a mid-day check. A markedly high random value will usually prompt your doctor to confirm with a fasting test or HbA1c.
Preparation
