What this test measures
This rapid antigen test detects proteins released by the malaria parasite and distinguishes Plasmodium falciparum from other species. Because it does not depend on catching the parasite mid-cycle, it can pick up infection even when the sample is taken between fever spikes.
Who should consider it
Patients with suspected malaria whose smear came back negative but whose symptoms continue, and anyone who cannot easily time a sample to a fever peak. Your physician will usually read the antigen result alongside a smear.
Preparation
No fasting required. Mention any antimalarial medication taken recently.
