What this test measures
The LFT panel reports the liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT, alkaline phosphatase and GGT, along with total and direct bilirubin, total protein and albumin. Raised enzymes suggest liver cells are under stress; changes in bilirubin and proteins point to how well the organ is doing its everyday work.
Who should consider it
Anyone with yellowing of the eyes, persistent nausea, right upper abdominal discomfort or unusual fatigue. Also useful for people on long-term medication, and for adults flagged with fatty liver on ultrasound – a common finding in Greater Noida West health camps.
Preparation
An 8 to 10 hour fast is preferred for the cleanest baseline, though your physician may allow a non-fasting sample.
