What this test measures
This screening test looks for antibodies to HIV types 1 and 2, and in fourth-generation formats also the p24 antigen, which appears earlier. It is a screening test: a reactive result is always followed by a confirmatory test before anything is concluded.
Who should consider it
Screening is routine, not exceptional. It is recommended before surgery, during pregnancy, before blood donation, after any possible exposure, and simply as part of taking charge of your own health. Testing early gives you options; waiting does not.
Preparation
No fasting required. If you are testing after a specific exposure, discuss timing with your physician, as antibodies take a few weeks to become detectable.
