What this test measures
Most thyroid hormone in blood is bound to carrier proteins and inactive. This panel measures Free T3 and Free T4, the fraction genuinely available to your cells, alongside TSH. Because carrier protein levels shift in pregnancy and with certain medicines, free hormone levels can give a clearer picture than total T3 and T4.
Who should consider it
People whose total thyroid results do not match their symptoms, women who are pregnant or on oestrogen therapy, and patients whose physician has specifically asked for free hormone levels.
Preparation
No fasting required. Morning sample preferred; take it before your thyroid medication if you are on one.
