Monsoon season in Noida Extension brings a predictable wave of fever, and the hardest part for most families is not knowing whether it is ordinary viral fever or something that needs closer watching. This page explains which dengue test to ask for, when to take it, and what the results actually mean.

Which dengue test do you need, and when?

The right test depends entirely on how many days you have had fever. Testing too early or too late is the single most common reason a dengue test comes back negative in someone who does have dengue.

  • Day 1 to day 5 of fever — Dengue NS1 antigen. NS1 is a protein the virus itself releases, so it shows up early. This is the test to ask for in the first few days.
  • From about day 5 onwards — Dengue IgM antibody. Your immune system takes several days to produce IgM, so it is usually not detectable in the first few days of fever.
  • Dengue IgG. Appears later in a first infection, but can rise early in a repeat infection. It mainly helps distinguish a current infection from a past one.
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) with platelet count. Ordered alongside, because the platelet trend over several days often matters more than any single value.

If your fever started three days ago, an NS1 test makes sense. If it started a week ago, IgM is the more useful test. When you book, tell us the day your fever started and we will confirm which test to send.

Dengue or ordinary viral fever?

Both start with fever and body ache, so symptoms alone rarely settle the question. Features that more often accompany dengue include severe pain behind the eyes, intense joint and muscle pain, a skin rash appearing a few days in, and a falling platelet count. Ordinary viral fever more often comes with sore throat, runny nose and cough.

This is a guide, not a diagnosis. Plenty of dengue cases look unremarkable early on, and plenty of non-dengue fevers cause severe body ache. A blood test is what separates them.

Platelet monitoring at home

For patients recovering at home, the platelet count usually needs checking more than once. Index Path Labs runs daily repeat collection for exactly this — the same phlebotomist route, at a fixed time each day, with the result on WhatsApp so you can forward it to your treating doctor without leaving the house.

A single platelet reading in isolation says less than the direction of travel across three days. That is why repeat testing matters, and why we report the previous value alongside the new one.

Warning signs that need medical attention, not another test

Some symptoms mean a person should be seen by a doctor promptly rather than waiting for the next blood report:

  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down
  • Bleeding from the gums or nose, or blood in vomit or stool
  • Unusual drowsiness, restlessness or confusion
  • Cold or clammy skin, or a drop in urine output
  • A sudden drop in temperature accompanied by the person becoming more unwell rather than less

If any of these appear, contact your physician or go to a hospital. Do not wait for a lab report.

How to book a dengue test at home

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast before a dengue test?

No. Dengue NS1, IgG/IgM and a platelet count need no fasting, and the sample can be collected at any time of day. If a doctor has also asked for blood sugar or a lipid profile alongside, those do need an 8 to 12 hour fast.

How soon will I get the report?

Dengue reports are usually delivered the same day. Samples collected before 9 AM are typically reported the same evening, on WhatsApp and by email if you prefer.

Can you collect a sample on Sunday?

Yes. Home collection runs seven days a week, and the lab is open Sunday from 8 AM to 5 PM. During monsoon we keep slots open specifically for fever cases.

My platelet count is low. What should I do?

Share the report with your treating doctor, who will interpret it alongside your symptoms and clinical examination. A laboratory can measure a platelet count; it cannot decide what that count means for you. If any of the warning signs listed above are present, seek medical care straight away.
