What this test measures
This test detects human chorionic gonadotropin, the hormone produced once a fertilised egg implants. It becomes detectable in urine from around the time of a missed period, and rises quickly in the days that follow.
Who should consider it
Anyone with a missed or delayed period, or with early signs such as nausea, breast tenderness or unusual fatigue. A laboratory-run test avoids the reading errors common with home strips. A negative result taken very early is worth repeating after a few days.
Preparation
Use the first urine passed after waking, when hCG is most concentrated. Avoid drinking large amounts of water beforehand, as dilute urine can produce a falsely negative result.
