What this test measures
Widal detects antibodies against Salmonella typhi and paratyphi. It becomes meaningful only after roughly the first week of fever, and results are read as titres rather than a simple positive or negative – which is why your physician will interpret it against your symptoms and, ideally, a paired sample.
Who should consider it
Patients with prolonged fever, abdominal discomfort, poor appetite and headache lasting beyond a week, particularly during and after monsoon in Greater Noida West. A single Widal reading on day three of fever tells you very little.
Preparation
No fasting required. Mention any recent typhoid vaccination or antibiotic course, as both affect interpretation.
