What this test measures
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is released by the pituitary gland to tell the thyroid how hard to work. When the thyroid underperforms, TSH rises; when it overperforms, TSH falls. That makes a single TSH value the most sensitive first-line screen available.
Who should consider it
Adults screening for thyroid problems for the first time, anyone already on thyroid medication who needs a routine dose check, and women planning a pregnancy. If TSH comes back outside range, your doctor may add T3 and T4.
Preparation
No fasting required. Morning samples are preferred, and if you are on thyroid medication, test before taking your dose.
