What this test measures
The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a vertical tube over one hour, read by the Westergren method. Inflammatory proteins make cells clump and fall faster, so a raised ESR signals that inflammation is present somewhere – without saying where.
Who should consider it
Patients with prolonged fever, unexplained weight loss, persistent joint pain or suspected chronic infection. Because ESR is non-specific, your physician will read it alongside your symptoms and usually with a CRP or CBC.
Preparation
No fasting required. Mention if you are pregnant or menstruating, as both can raise ESR without any illness.
