What this test measures
C-Reactive Protein is made by the liver in response to inflammation. It rises within hours of an inflammatory trigger and falls quickly once it settles, which makes it a more responsive marker than ESR for tracking an illness day by day.
Who should consider it
Patients with fever where the cause is unclear, people being monitored through an infection, and anyone whose physician wants to see whether treatment is working. A quantitative result gives a number to track rather than a simple positive or negative.
