What this test measures
Creatinine is a waste product your muscles produce steadily and your kidneys clear. Because production stays fairly constant, the level left in blood is a dependable indicator of how well the kidneys are filtering, and it is used to calculate estimated GFR.
Who should consider it
People living with diabetes or high blood pressure, anyone on long-term painkillers or medication that needs kidney monitoring, and patients before certain scans or procedures. Kidney function often declines silently, so periodic checking matters more than waiting for symptoms.
Preparation
No fasting strictly required. Stay normally hydrated and avoid a heavy non-vegetarian meal or intense exercise the evening before, as both can nudge the reading up.
