What this test measures
HBsAg is a protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. Finding it in blood indicates a current infection, either recent or long-standing. It is the standard opening test whenever hepatitis B needs to be ruled in or out.
Who should consider it
Anyone being screened before surgery, pregnancy or blood donation; healthcare workers; household contacts of someone with hepatitis B; and people with unexplained raised liver enzymes. Many people carry hepatitis B for years with no symptoms at all, which is precisely why screening exists.
