What this test measures
Luteinising Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone are released by the pituitary to drive the ovaries and testes; prolactin can suppress both when it runs high. Measured together they give your physician the opening picture of how the reproductive hormone axis is functioning.
Who should consider it
Women with irregular, absent or unusually heavy periods, suspected PCOS, or difficulty conceiving; women being assessed around menopause; and men with low libido or fertility concerns. This panel is usually the first step before any more specialised testing.
Preparation
For women with regular cycles, the sample is typically taken on day 2 or day 3 of the period unless your doctor advises otherwise – please confirm before booking. A rested morning sample is preferred because of prolactin.
