What this test measures
The KFT panel reports blood urea, serum creatinine, uric acid, and the electrolytes sodium, potassium and chloride, usually with calculated eGFR. These figures together indicate how efficiently your kidneys are clearing waste and holding your body chemistry in balance.
Who should consider it
People living with diabetes or high blood pressure – the two most common reasons kidney function declines quietly – as well as anyone with swelling around the ankles or eyes, changes in urine output, or long-term painkiller use. Early kidney changes rarely announce themselves with symptoms.
Preparation
No strict fasting is required, though an 8 hour fast is preferred when KFT is bundled with a lipid or sugar panel. Stay normally hydrated.
